Fellow Common Sense Texans:

As you know, a major part of our mission is to help inform our members and our fellow Texans with information about their representatives in Washington, Austin and their local areas.  In order to give our fellow Texans more information about the men and women representing them in Austin, we have performed an analysis of certain fiscal responsibility ratings of all 150 members of the State House using information from 4 sources:

Texans for Fiscal Responsibility 2009 Ratings

Heritage Alliance 2009 Economic Ratings

Texans for Fiscal Responsibility 2007 Ratings

Americans for Prosperity-Texas 2007 Ratings

We collected the ratings for each of the 150 members of the Texas State House and averaged the four ratings together for each (where available) in order to generate a 'composite' fiscal responsibility rating for each member.  We then sorted the legislators by their composite fiscal responsibility ratings and plotted them on three graphs:

Fiscal Responsibility Index - All Texas State House Members

Fiscal Responsibility Index - Texas State House Members Rated 50% and Above

Fiscal Responsibility Index - Texas State House Members Rated Below 50%

NOTE : a higher rating reflects a voting record in favor of fiscal responsibility, while a lower rating reflects a voting record against fiscal responsibility.  A legislator with a rating of 50% is voting against the taxpayers as often as he or she is voting in the taxpayers' interests.

Most of our members already know who represents them in the State House, but if you don't, you can look it up here:

http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Address.aspx

Please note that these graphs and numbers do not tell you everything you need to know about your state house member, but these ratings should serve as a starting point for learning more about who your state house members are and how they have been voting down in Austin.

Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

What do the numbers actually mean/ how are the defined?
by kathleen leos  2009-11-16 14:46:27
what efforts are being made to replace representatives who fall below the 50% index on fiscal responsibility?
by John King  2009-11-16 15:09:55
Excellent Information, and Thanks.
BUT, (For some of us Dummies) which end of the graph is the desired end? I presume the legislator with the nearest score to 100% is desired. Is that correct?
by Barbara  2009-11-16 15:19:25
It seems that our representative, Tommy Merritt is not very fiscally responsible and is not what we would like to see in our representative. I think we will take a closer look at someone who may oppose him in the next election cycle.
by kreinhold  2009-11-16 15:52:51
We need the same for the Senate. The senate in TX has been RINO central for quite a while. Florence Shapiro is rated under 50% and from a very conservative area.

Great intel!
by June Marie  2009-11-17 09:28:13
thank you for this information... I am shocked to learn of the dismal score of my state representative, Allen Vaught. Knowledge is power....I will work to get him out of the state house. Thanks for all your hard work.
by Justin   2009-12-01 21:20:48
June- Vaught most go and recent data shows his seat is vulnerable. We just need a patriot to stand up and run against him. You know anyone willing to run? if so please call 972-998-7443
by  TLaCour  2009-12-05 12:57:33
June, Justin, Vaught is my rep too. Include me if you have an idea how to unseat this guy. When is the filing deadline? tglacour@yahoo.com
by Ben  2009-11-17 12:23:08
In you're table you have Rep. Dan Patrick listed as Rep. Diane Patrick.
Please correct, Thanks
by Ken Piel  2009-11-18 13:47:53
This information in enormously helpful. Fortunately, the senators and representatives for my area are voting responsibly.
by John Boykin  2009-11-18 14:11:10
This is a very useful and revealing set of data. I know one representative who will not receive my vote.
by Barbara Harless  2009-11-18 14:25:52
This is GREAT!!! Nice work!
by BILL RUSHING  2009-11-18 16:02:48
Very good information Im hate to admit it but my state rep. is one of thoeu in the twenty percentile I can see i must work to unseat him.
by LL  2009-11-18 17:26:27
My Rep is a well know indiv in my community, everyone loves him, thinks he great, etc. I wonder what they would think if they saw this information...
by jjetton  2009-11-18 18:53:14
Great work! It is interesting to see that exactly half of our state reps are voting half way responsibly or better and the other half has thrown fiscal responsibility out the window. With the nation clearly spiraling out of control, I appreciate the effort being made to draw attention to the work we need to do in our own state. God bless Texas and the people who work to keep Texas strong!
by Jamespcol  2009-11-18 21:47:40
Can you please comment on the criteria used to define voting for or against constituents as regards to fiscally responsibility.

Like every other rating system, the results achieved are totally dependent upon the criteria selected and are easily skewed to produce desired outcomes. Unless I missed it, I couldn't find the underlying basis for TFR's ratings. Heritage does enumerate the bills upon which they base their numbers, but I would still strongly encourage folks to look carefully at each bill's particulars (beyond what is posted on the website) before passing final judgment. Far too many of these rating scales begin with the end in mind, if you get my drift...
by Benji  2009-11-19 09:23:00
Please see the following links for TFR. You have to dig a little to find the bills

by Karl Sweetman  2009-11-20 09:21:16
Thanks Benji. You're right, you do have to dig to find the bills on which the ratings were based (and weighted /-). Even with this knowledge, if you really want objectivity, you need to research each bill and the legislative circumstances surrounding each before arriving at a conclusion. I learned long ago not to take "official positions" of advocacy organizations at face value. As stated in my previous comments, the results are far too easily "fudged" in order to achieve the desired outcomes. Politics is politics, and unfortunately it's not limited to just legislators--special interest groups are often just as guilty of obfuscation, cronyism and cooking the books. Bottom line--you have to dig if you want the unvarnished truth from any of these people (commonsensetexans included).
by  TLaCour  2009-12-05 13:01:29
Very good points, Karl. I will follow the links Benji provided below to see how I myself would rate the infamous Allen Vaught, D-107.
by Bill Foster  2009-11-18 23:06:54
Thank you. this is a good tool with which to hold our elected officials accountable. Jim Pitts in District 10 seems to be doing a whole lot less than his press says!
by Tina  2009-11-19 09:38:10
Why is Jeb Hensarling not on there?
by  TXoMatic  2009-11-19 18:18:45
Because he is a U.S. Representative. These ratings are for State Reps.
by Nell Helfenbein  2009-11-19 10:20:48
Thank you so much for the hard work that goes into completing a graph that depicts fiscal responsibility. Thanks also for providing us the representative for each zip code. Saved me many hours of research.
by Robert Sickels  2009-11-19 12:42:34
We need to start hitting the states that elected fools like Harry Reid. We need to tell people not to go and spend there money in places that elect people that are trying to ruin America. That is the next step to boycot these states. What would Nevada do with out Texas money? Not much ! They need us more than we need them.
by Jean McIver  2009-11-20 00:09:32
Thanks for making it perfectly clear with these charts which Representatives need to receive pink slips from their constituents!
by Tom Cotton  2009-11-20 08:52:25
I find the information provided very helpfull. IMO we should find some conservative candidates to run in the primaries against any member not above 80% in the ratings. They all need a wakeup call.
by Shirley  2009-11-21 11:17:15
Very good information. It appears that Carol Kent, with a score of 28, needs to be voted out of office in the next election.
by Jimmy McIver  2009-11-21 11:41:28
superb work, fortunately our State Rep is doing a better job than a lot of others which I'm happy to know.
by Bruce  2009-12-02 12:12:12
WE NEED A LIST IN ALPHA ORDER
by Ann Austin  2009-12-04 16:31:17
Query: it is very helpful to provide this (great) intel to us. How do we make it clear to our representatives that: (1) we know of their performance; and (2) we have an efficient way of providing this info to voters?
by J Odneal  2009-12-12 10:54:06
This is really a great chart even though one should look further. As one who voted in Vaught, I can sure help to vote him out, which was tried last election. One danger in having too many candidates in any race is that one on a conservative side may not get in, as was evidenced w/Clinton winning because Perot was on the ballet. It seems now we have 3 conservatives running for govenor & 1 democrat. With all the split votes, this could be dangerous. Thoughts?

i deplore your attempt to deny funding our troops just because of health care legislation! there is no common sense in your organization. you lost the election, and will lose again because you're losers!
by Katharine Moreno  2009-12-23 15:29:28
We need to have Common Sense Texans organize a visit to Austin so that all of these organization can demand from Perry a special session to nullify health care. it needs to happen NOW!

Hot dawg! I'm ready to give Leibowitz the BOOT!
Thanks so much for the heads up!
by Patricia S. Reinhart  2010-01-06 16:58:05
According to my understanding - it is suppose to be "for the people, by the people....." so how can congress and other politicians vote themselves a raise if they technically "work for me and the rest of the people"? I know that they should NOT get a raise if they are under 75% on fiscal responsiblity.
by jimmymc  2010-01-13 09:48:12
I need to know if our members support Ben Bius running against Ogden for the U.S. House of Representatives? Please advise!
by jimmymc  2010-01-13 09:54:15
sorry, I'm get'n too darn old, Ben Bius is running for the Texas Senate in District 5 not the U.S. House. I still need to know if he's a candidate we can support?
